What Happens to the Wood Chips After Stump Grinding?
A ground stump produces a surprising volume of wood chips and grindings — often more than homeowners expect, especially from a larger tree. What happens to that material is entirely up to you: we can haul it away completely, leave it piled to the side for you to use as mulch around trees and garden beds, or spread it thin across nearby landscaping.
Fresh stump grindings make reasonable mulch for non-edible landscaping beds once they've had a little time to break down, though they're not ideal for vegetable gardens right away since fresh wood chips can temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil as they decompose.
We'll ask which option you prefer before we start grinding so the cleanup matches what you actually want done with the material, rather than defaulting to one approach.
Why Does the Ground Sink After a Stump Is Ground?
Grinding removes the visible stump and surface roots, but a substantial mass of root system typically remains below grade, continuing to decompose for months or years afterward. As that buried wood breaks down, the soil above it settles, which is why a stump area that looked level right after grinding can develop a shallow dip in the following season if it isn't backfilled properly.
We backfill ground stump areas with topsoil and compact it to reduce future settling, and grade the surrounding area so water doesn't pool in the low spot. It's not a guarantee against any settling at all — that's just how decomposing wood behaves — but proper backfill significantly reduces how much and how fast it happens.
If you're planning to seed or sod the area soon after grinding, ask us about backfill depth so the surface is ready for new grass rather than settling underneath it later.
Can You Keep the Wood From Your Stump or Tree?
In many cases, yes. If a tree was recently taken down and you want to keep some of the trunk wood for firewood or a fire pit before we grind the remaining stump, let us know when you call — we can work around larger rounds you want to set aside.
Once we're grinding the stump itself, the material comes out as wood chips rather than usable firewood rounds, so any salvaging needs to happen on the trunk sections before the stump grinding starts.
This is a common request after a tree removal where the tree service hauled off the trunk but left rounds behind, or where a homeowner wants to keep some wood for a future fire pit — just mention it up front and we'll plan the job around it.
