How Deep Below Grade Can a Stump Be Ground?
Standard residential stump grinding typically clears the stump several inches below the surrounding grade, which is enough for grass, seeding, and most landscaping. Some projects need deeper grinding — preparing an area for a new paver patio, a poured footing, or utility work — where any remaining stump or major root just below the surface would interfere later.
We can grind deeper than the standard depth on request, though it does add time to the job since it means more material to clear and often more root mass to work through. Let us know during the estimate what the area is being used for so we can plan the right depth from the start.

Do I Need a Stump Ground Before Installing a Pool or Deck?
Yes, in almost every case. A stump or significant root mass anywhere within the footprint of a planned pool, deck footing, or foundation needs to be fully cleared before excavation — leaving it in place risks equipment damage during digging and can affect how well concrete footings or deck posts settle over time.
We coordinate timing with pool and deck contractors regularly, since stump grinding typically needs to happen before their excavation crew arrives on-site. If you already have a contractor scheduled, let us know their timeline when you call so we can get the stump cleared with room to spare.
Root systems often extend further than the visible stump, so if your project footprint is close to an old stump even without the stump directly in the way, it's worth having us assess whether roots underground could still cause problems.
Can You Remove an Old, Partially Decayed Stump?
Yes, and old or partially decayed stumps are often easier to grind than fresh ones since the wood has softened, though the grinding still needs to be thorough to prevent regrowth from any remaining live roots and to clear pests that may have moved into the decaying wood.
Tree rings — the raised circle of bark and wood left in a lawn for years after a stump was cut flush but never properly ground — are one of the most common "finally getting around to it" calls we get. They're usually straightforward to clear since there's less structural wood left to grind through.
